چکیده
Based on sediment cores and geophysical data collected from Petermann Fjord northern Nares Strait, NW Greenland, an Arctic ice shelf facies is presented that distinguishes sub pro environments. Sediment were sites beneath the present day Ice Tongue (PIT) in deglacial sediments of Strait with a focus understanding glacial oceanographic history over last 11,000 cal yr BP. The modern laminated devoid coarse clasts (IRD) due to strong basal melting releases debris (debris filtering) at grounding zone driven by buoyant subglacial meltwater entrained Atlantic Water. Laminated deep basin proximal gounding comprise layers fine mud formed suspension settling turbid plumes (plumites) interrupted normally graded very sand medium silt sharp contacts rip-up mud, interpreted as turbidites. An inner fjord sill limits distribution gravity flows basin, such beyond tongue largely only plumites. Bioturbation foraminiferal abundances increase distance zone. benthic species, Elphidium clavatum absent tongue, but dominant influenced environment tongue. sparse IRD PIT derives mainly englacial side valley glaciers, rock falls steep walls sea ice. We use characteristics infer past presence shelves using analyses several cruises (OD1507, HLY03, 2001LSSL, RYDER19). On bathymetric highs, bioturbated dispersed overlies 10–15 m thick, distinctly clay unit rare foraminifera which forms drape nearly uniform thickness. interpret these represent glaciomarine deposition emanating streams terminated floating shelves. layers, shifts composition (qXRD, MS XRF) faunal assemblage changes document periods ice-shelf instability sometimes, not always, coupled retreat. Lincoln Sea and Nares Strait
A winter phenomenon of ice break-up takes place in Lincoln Sea every year. A previous study based on ERS-1 SAR data has been resumed based on Radarsat data that is briefly reported here. The study of two winters, 1996-1997 and 1997-1998, is supported by wind data. It is found that the ice motion in the area often is driven by wind but also that it is seriously influenced by blocking at the entr...
متن کاملLate Pleistocene to Holocene Strata from Soft-Sediment Coring at the AND-1B Site, ANDRILL McMurdo Ice Shelf Project, Antarctica
Prior to rotary coring, a range of soft-sediment coring tools were deployed to recover the sediment-water interface and the upper few metres of strata, whose integrity was threatened by embedment of the sea riser for drilling of the ANDRILL (AND)-1A/1B holes. These coring options included (1) a sediment gravity corer deployed through the ice-shelf hole, and (2) a push corer deployed through the...
متن کاملEarly Holocene history of the west Greenland Ice Sheet and the GH-8.2 event
The margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet retreated rapidly during the first few thousand years of the Holocene. During this period of relative warmth, known as the Holocene thermal maximum, ice core records identify a significant short-lived cooling event at approximately 8.4–8.0 ka cal. yr BP (the ‘GH-8.2 event’) associated with a 5–7 1C fall in mean annual air temperature over the centre of the ...
متن کاملHolocene cooling culminates in sea ice oscillations in Fram Strait
A reconstruction of Holocene sea ice conditions in the Fram Strait provides insight into the palaeoenvironmental and palaeoceanographic development of this climate sensitive area during the past 8500 years BP. Organic geochemical analyses of sediment cores from eastern and western Fram Strait enable the identification of variations in the ice coverage that can be linked to changes in the oceani...
متن کاملPaired bedrock and boulder 10Be concentrations resulting from early Holocene ice retreat near Jakobshavn Isfjord, western Greenland
We measured in situ cosmogenic 10Be in 16 bedrock and 14 boulder samples collected along a 40-km transect outside of and normal to the modern ice margin near Sikuijuitsoq Fjord in central-west Greenland (69 N). We use these data to understand better the efficiency of glacial erosion and to infer the timing, pattern, and rate of ice loss after the last glaciation. In general, the ages of paired ...
